Abbey Electrical is a long-established, family-run domestic appliance repair and sales business based in Knaresborough. Serving Harrogate, Ripon, Wetherby, Pateley Bridge, and the surrounding villages, the company provides expert repair services for household appliances including washing machines, tumble dryers, and dishwashers, alongside the supply and installation of new appliances.
The business was founded in 1974 by brothers-in-law Graham Brown and David Smith. David was a qualified electrician, while Graham had trained as a domestic appliance engineer, working with major manufacturers including Hoover and Hotpoint during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Combining their complementary skills, they established Abbey Electrical with a focus on both electrical work and appliance repairs.
By 1976, the business had outgrown its original base in David’s garage on Grimbald Road and moved to its first shop on Knaresborough High Street. From there, Abbey Electrical expanded into retail sales, employing apprentices and qualified engineers to support growing demand for repairs and installations in customers’ homes.
Following David’s passing in 1994, Graham continued the business, concentrating on appliance repairs and retail. Over time, the next generation became involved, with Graham’s daughters Claire and Melanie joining the team. Claire trained as an appliance engineer, while Melanie supported the office and sales operations. In 2004, after nearly 30 years on the High Street, the business relocated to larger premises on Chain Lane to accommodate its continued growth.
In 2023, after almost five decades, Graham retired and handed the business over to Claire and Melanie. They were later joined by their nephew Jack, who qualified as an engineer and now supports the repair and installation side of the business. Reflecting changing technology and increased demand for replacement appliances, Abbey Electrical expanded its showroom in 2025 to offer a wider range of modern products.
Today, Abbey Electrical remains firmly rooted in its family values, continuing to provide reliable service, expert advice, and personal customer care. With over 50 years of history behind it, the business looks ahead with confidence, committed to serving both long-standing customers and new households across the region.
