Harrogate in Bloom: Celebrating The Spring Flower Show

It’s that time of year again, excitement over lighter nights just around the corner, the first time mowing the lawn after Winter, and time to get the high strength plant food back out to revitalise your blooms! Britain boasts a rich history steeped in horticulture and its accompanying beauty, with Harrogate exemplifying this.

Horticulture gained national importance in Britain with the founding of the Royal Horticultural Society in 1804, which aimed to advance plant knowledge and cultivation. In the North, formal recognition arrived in 1911 with the North of England Horticultural Society, although Harrogate already promoted garden culture through its spa traditions and Harlow Carr Springs. Harrogate’s role was cemented in 1920 when it hosted the Society’s first flower show, which moved to the Valley Gardens in 1934. Following a wartime break, the shows resumed in 1950 and grew further with the introduction of the Great Autumn Flower Show in 1975.

Harrogate Life spoke with horticultural expert Martin Fish of The Potting Shed Theatre. A regular at Harrogate Flower Shows, he kindly shared his thoughts:

Every show has its own personality. How would you describe Harrogate Flower Show’s?

“Over the years that I’ve been involved with the Harrogate Flower Shows I’ve always found them to be extremely friendly and welcoming. I love the traditional feel to the shows, but they also showcase the latest trends from the gardening world. It’s a great place to find new plants and to get ideas for your own garden, large or small.”

Is there a particular part of the event that you most enjoy?

“As a gardener myself, I’m always drawn to the nursery displays. Harrogate attracts many of the top specialist nurseries from across the UK to create amazing plants displays that are judged on the eve of the show. The site of all the nursery displays is amazing and you’ll find plants of all types to buy for the garden or house with the added bonus of being able to talk to the people that grew them.”

Is there any advice you could give to aspiring gardeners?

“The Harrogate Flower Shows are the perfect place to gain knowledge from the stand holders or by listening to some of the gardening talks and practical demonstrations on the Grow Live stage, where you can also ask your gardening questions. Whether you are new to gardening or a seasoned grower, there is also something that you can learn to increase your knowledge and the Harrogate Spring Flower Show is the perfect place to kick start the gardening season.”

This year’s show introduces a new Floral Art Schedule with creative competitions for all skill levels, plus opportunities to design Show Gardens, Creative Borders, and APL Feature Gardens. Visitors can also enjoy live theatres, food and drink, lifestyle stalls, and music.

Harrogate Spring Flower Show runs 23–26 April 2026. Early-bird tickets are available until 7 April, with gift E-Vouchers also on sale.
